Colourful Dragonflies & Koi fish!

23rd September 2008
岡山県哲西町鯉が窪湿原
Koi ga Kubo Marshland, Tessei Town, Okayama Precture

I managed to capture these unique dragonflies up in a swampland area up in the mountains in Okayama Prefecture today. Usually these insects are too fast for us to appreciate their beauty.

The marshland is home to many types of plants, shrubs, trees as well as various insects and animals. Apparently it is unusual to find marshland up in the mountains. The place is spread out making it a nice place to go for a stroll amongst nature.

It was our first time to visit the national park but it was a quite nice place to enjoy going for walking along the marshland and observing insects and seasonal flowers. In autumn we can often see dragonflies which have red tails in rice fields and on river banks. In Japan we call them Aka tonbo in Japanese. (Red dragonflies) I have seen blue tail dragonflies before but didn't know the name so I have checked it. It is called Monosashi tonbo. It means ruler dragonflies in English. The blue tail looks like a ruler, so I guess that's why it was named that. It's interesting isn't it? The park is close to the town where you live. When we have time next time I would like to visit there again!
